Abstract

In this narrative case study, the significance of Art Therapy is established with a dually-diagnosed adolescent at a Regional Day Treatment Centre. For a ten month period of weekly, one hour sessions, a strong relationship was established in order to facilitate the manifestation of transitional object (a ‘hand’ symbol) in the art. Upon manifestation, this object developed as a theme and transferred onto the art therapist, (from an aggressive message to one of caring), while creating a nurturing bond of attachment between client and therapist. With time, trust and stability, a lasting relationship was formed which created a therapeutic environment for the client. Therefore, the symbolic process of attachment between client and therapist manifested in the art, through the relationship and the creation of art.
