Abstract

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with pruritus that occurs most frecquently in children. A family history of atopy (eczema, asthma, or allergic rhinitis) and skin barrier abnormalities genetically determined are major risk factors for atopic dermatitis. The diagnosis of atopic dermatitis is clinical, based upon the history, onset, and morphology of skin lesions. The goals of treatment are to reduce symptoms, prevent exacerbations, to improve the quality of life and minimize therapeutic risks. The optimal management is based on the severity of the disease and involves the elimination of exacerbating factors, restoration of the skin barrier function, pharmacologic treatment of skin inflammation (topic and systemic agents), and patient education.
