Abstract
Atomic energy level shifts due to the presence of a laser field are calculated to order e 2, and compared with those obtained recently using the space-translation Hamiltonian. Extensive cancellation amongst terms occur; for this reason all contributions to order e 2 must be included in the description of such level shifts.
