Abstract

Elastic wellbore stability studies have considered the influence of a variety of material and environmental factors on the variation of rock stresses around cylindrical cavities in a porous medium. However, relatively little work has been done to quantify the effects of nonuniform formation support on rock stresses, in particular in the area of non-numerical solutions convenient for use in design calculations. Hence an approximate solution has been derived which estimates the rock stresses in the vicinity of a slotted casing, quantifying the stress concentrations introduced by nonuniform structural support of a cylindrical cavity under radial flow conditions. The analysis employs an uncoupled linear model to obtain a closed form solution in terms of complex potentials.
