Abstract

This paper will provide a practical exploration of how evidence related to theway inwhich environmental factors influence physiological birthingpayingparticular attention tovaginal breechbirth. Aims: To appreciate the influence of physical environment on the birthing woman; to suggest some practical ideas and principles for creating a calm and functional birth space for women experiencing a planned or ‘surprise’ vaginal breech birth; to discuss the power of words, attitudes and ‘presence’ of caregivers participating in vaginal breech birth. The themes to be discussed will include: setting up the space; supporting neurophysiology through environment; promoting safety and privacy through the senses information sharing; and, the use of language. Therewill be a discussion of evidence related to: neurophysiology and the birth environment; how to remodel a regular birthing suite to promote a calms, quiet space for birthing and ways to address the challenges in the the physical environment.
