Adolescence is prone to nutritional imbalances. Research in SMPN 18 Surakarta showed that 50% of adolescents were thinned, 10% were overweight, and 3,3% were obese. This study aimed to analyze whether chronotype, breakfast habits, and sleep quality contribute to malnutrition among adolescents. This research was conducted in Surakarta City between November 2024-January 2025 and used a cross-sectional as the design with multistage sampling. The Lemeshow Formula showed that the minimum sample size was 106. The instruments used were MEQ, Breakfast Habits, and PSQI questionnaires as well as body weight and height measurements. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed that the data is normally distributed. Pearson used as the bivariate test and multiple linear regression as the multivariate test. There was no correlation between chronotype (p = 0,900; r = 0,011), breakfast habits (p = 0,298; r = 0,087), and sleep quality (p = 0,420; r = 0,067) and BMI-for-age. There was no correlation between all independent variables and the dependent variable (F = 0,585). This research concluded that there is no correlation between chronotype, breakfast habits, and sleep quality with BMI-for-age in adolescents. However, further research with more diverse subjects and lifestyle variables is required to confirm these findings.

This study aims to evaluate the relationship between sleep quality and breakfast habits among students at the School of Health. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 291 students at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University School of Health between January and May 2020. Data was collected through a questionnaire that included sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric information, breakfast habits, and sleep patterns. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Multiple linear regression was used to understand breakfast behaviour and other factors affecting the PSQI total score. The mean age of the participants was 20.78 (±2.33) years, and 75% were women. The study revealed that 68% of the participants had poor sleep quality, and 76% of those with good sleep quality had regular breakfast habits (p<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that consuming eggs less than 1-2 times a week (β=1.45) and consuming filter coffee every day (β=1.44) increased PSQI scores, indicating poorer sleep quality. Conversely, regular breakfast (β=-0.78) and lunch (β=-0.62) consumption were associated with lower PSQI scores, indicating better sleep quality (R²=0.21, p<0.01). This study found a significant bidirectional relationship between sleep quality and breakfast habits among university students. Regular breakfast consumption, adherence to meal timing, and minimizing the time interval between the last meal and bedtime are associated with better sleep quality.

  • Barbara D Pachikian + 3 more

A saffron extract has been found to be effective in the context of depression and anxiety, but its effect on sleep quality has not been investigating yet using objective approaches. For this purpose, a randomized double-blind controlled study was conducted in subjects presenting mild to moderate sleep disorder associated with anxiety. Sixty-six subjects were randomized and supplemented with a placebo (maltodextrin) or a saffron extract (15.5 mg per day) for 6 weeks. Actigraphy was used to collect objective data related to sleep quality at baseline, at the middle and at the end of the intervention. Sleep quality was also assessed by completion of the LSEQ and PSQI questionnaires and quality of life by completion of the SF-36 questionnaire. Six weeks of saffron supplementation led to an increased time in bed assessed by actigraphy, to an improved ease of getting to sleep evaluated by the LSEQ questionnaire and to an improved sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, and global scores evaluated by the PSQI questionnaire, whereas those parameters were not modified by the placebo. In conclusion, those results suggest that a saffron extract could be a natural and safe nutritional strategy to improve sleep duration and quality.

Time to rethink sleep quality: PSQI scores reflect sleep quality on workdays.
  • Feb 6, 2018
  • Sleep
  • Luísa K Pilz + 3 more

The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is the most common measure of sleep quality. Its questions refer to "usual" sleep habits during the last month. Considering how different sleep-wake behavior can be between workdays and work-free days, we hypothesized that sleep quality should show similar differences. We investigated these potential differences in a cross-sectional online study using the original and two adapted versions of the PSQI that replaced "usual" by explicitly referring to sleep on workdays or work-free days. Additionally, we investigated how these scores relate to chronotype and social jetlag assessed by the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire. Participants were recruited online, they had to be older than 18 years, following regular weekly work schedules, and they should not be shift workers. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to compare the three different versions of the PSQI (usual, work, and work-free). To find out whether PSQI score differences could be predicted by chronotype and/or social jetlag a mediation analysis was carried out. Workday PSQI scores were similar to the original "usual" scores, two points higher than the PSQI score on work-free days and above the cutoff designating poor sleep quality. PSQI components and time variables also differed between workdays and work-free days. Chronotype correlated with the difference between PSQI scores on workdays and on work-free days, an association mediated by social jetlag. Our results suggest that the original PSQI predominantly reports sleep quality on workdays and that work schedules may affect sleep quality. The mediation of social jetlag on the association of chronotype and PSQI score differences could mean that not chronotype per se, but rather the collision of an individuals' chronotype with fixed work schedules explains the differences between sleep on workdays and work-free days. Understanding how sleep quality differs between workdays and work-free days, how this difference can adequately be assessed through directing participants to focus on their sleep specifically on workdays vs. work-free days, and how circadian factors modulate this difference, is crucial to improve sleep quality.

To analyse whether poor breakfast habits in adolescence predict the metabolic syndrome and its components in adulthood. Previous studies suggest that regular breakfast consumption improves metabolic parameters. Prospective. Breakfast habits and other lifestyle variables at age 16 years were assessed from questionnaires. Poor breakfast habits were defined as skipping breakfast or only drinking or eating something sweet. At age 43 years, the effective sample consisted of 889 participants defined as having the metabolic syndrome or not, using the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios and confidence intervals. The Northern Swedish Cohort, a longitudinal population-based cohort with 27-year follow-up. Adolescents (age 16 years). Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome at age 43 years was 27·0 %. Of the participants, 9·9 % were classified with poor breakfast habits at age 16 years. Adjusted odds for the metabolic syndrome at age 43 years was OR = 1·68 (95 % CI 1·01, 2·78) for those with poor breakfast habits at age 16 years compared with breakfast eaters. Looking at the metabolic syndrome components, poor breakfast habits at age 16 years were associated with central obesity (OR = 1·71; 95 % CI 1·00, 2·92) and high fasting glucose (OR = 1·75; 95 % CI 1·01, 3·02) at age 43 years, even after multivariate adjustments. Poor breakfast habits in adolescence predicted the metabolic syndrome in adulthood. Of the metabolic syndrome components, poor breakfast habits in adolescence predicted central obesity and high fasting glucose in adulthood. Further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between early breakfast habits and adult metabolic syndrome.

The association of chronotype on depression in adolescents: the mediating role of sensation seeking and sleep quality
  • May 8, 2025
  • BMC Psychiatry
  • Fangyi Wang + 11 more

ObjectivesThis study explores the relationships among chronotype, sensation seeking, sleep quality and depressive symptoms in adolescents with diagnosed depression, aiming to clarify the mechanisms by which chronotype is associated with depression.MethodsThis cross-sectional study assessed 216 adolescents with diagnosed depression using a demographic questionnaire, the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, the Sensation Seeking Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Beck Depression Inventory. Descriptive and correlational analyses were performed using SPSS 27.0, and structural equation modeling was conducted via AMOS to explore the mediating roles of sensation seeking and sleep quality in the relationship between chronotype and depression.ResultsThe study found that 60.6% of adolescents with depression were evening chronotypes. Evening chronotype was associated with higher sensation seeking (r = -0.134, p < 0.05), poorer sleep quality (r = -0.303, p < 0.01), and more severe depressive symptoms (r = -0.376, p < 0.01). Chronotype showed a direct effect on depressive symptoms (effect size = -0.318, 95% CI = -0.602 to -0.049, p < 0.05) and an indirect effect via sleep quality, accounting for 80.5% of the total effect. While sensation seeking alone was not a significant mediator, it contributed to a chain mediation with sleep quality, accounting for 13% of the total effect (combined effect size = -0.053, 95% CI = -0.163 to -0.005, p < 0.01).ConclusionsChronotype may play a significant role in adolescent depression, with both direct and indirect effects mediated by sleep quality and sensation seeking. The findings highlight the potential importance of sleep quality as a mediating factor, indicating that interventions targeting sleep improvement could be a promising avenue for further exploration in alleviating depressive symptoms in adolescents.
