Because of elevated levels of sex hormones, pregnant women are more prone than non-pregnant women to develop vaginal candidiasis. The standard of treatment for vaginal candidiasis in pregnancy is topical azole antifungal medication, but many pregnant women receive systemic antifungal treatment. It is unclear whether systemic antifungal treatment with oral fluconazole puts women at greater risk for gestational complications.
