Abstract

Social interest housing is a basic need for a large portion of the Brazilian population. To provide self-managed housing, when users participate in the process, moves away from capitalist logic and closer to the right to the city (LEFEBVRE, 1968). In this context, the aim was to understand the challenges and potentialities in achieving higher quality and sustainability within two study cases based on different strategies. The first strategy was the technical assistance, performed by the Periferico Research and Community Outreach Group (DF) in the urban project for the Dorothy Stang occupation, DF. The second was the technical assistance, by professionals who followed the guidelines of the Minha Casa Minha Vida Entidades Program in the Condominio das Mangueiras, Salvador-BA. The applied methodology is based on the quality of the urban project, sustainability, and quality of the urban form (ANDRADE & LEMOS, 2015). Identified challenges were: the need of infrastructure investments by the State in both cases, and that the professionals subordinated to a program encountered constraints. Identified potentialities were: the participative methodology of Periferico, the non-verticalized option of Condominio das Mangueiras, but, above all, the tool for the procurement of dignified housing that the project by Periferico became. Keywords: Social interest housing, self-management, technical assistance, sustainability.
