Abstract
The concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr, Sb, Fe, Zn, Ca, Cu, Ag, Ba and Hg, present in solid wastes of Pallavaram municipality landfill dumpsite located in Chennai were determined and their toxicity was assessed using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The TCLP method is a currently recognised international method for evaluation of heavy metals in the solid wastes. The solid waste samples were extracted with TCLP extraction fluids 1 (5.7 ml glacial propanoic acid and 64.3 ml 1 N NaOH diluted in 1 L water) and 2 (5.7 ml glacial propanoic acid diluted in 1 L water) and the extracted heavy metals were analysed. The total metal concentration and the metal contents determined by TCLP were correlated.
