Abstract
South African public sector is experiencing a lot of delays in delivering projects in time, while on the other hand there are a lot of rollovers on the government budget spending, wherein other areas are spending a lot of construction budgeted money on the remedial works of completed houses. These challenges brought to this study the reason to investigate on why there are many delays in the delivery of public construction projects by the main contractors on construction sites. The objectives set to achieve the purpose of this study include to identify the causes of the delays in the construction projects, and to identify the methods of minimizing construction delays in the public construction projects. The findings identified indicate the causes of delays affecting the delivery of public projects, where however the main factors found to be payment delays to the projects, problems with sub-contractors, mistakes during construction, political matters.
