Assessing the Impact of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) Adoption on Air Quality and Public Health in Indonesia

Indonesia faces a major challenge in reducing transport emissions, which contribute significantly to air pollution and increased potential for health risks. Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) adoption is one of the national strategies to reduce emission from the transportation sector, particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5). This study assesses the potential impacts of BEV adoption on air pollution and health co-benefit in Indonesia. National Vehicle Kilometre Travelled (VKT) data are used as an input for the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning (LEAP) tool to estimate PM2.5 emission and concentration, while the potential health impacts are assessed using AirQ+. Four scenarios with different levels of ambition were analysed: Business as Usual (BaU), scenario I (pessimistic), scenario II (moderate), and scenario III (ambitious), aligned with Indonesia’s net-zero target by 2060. Under BaU, PM2.5 emissions are projected to increase from 36.8 to 162.9 thousand metric tonnes, with concentrations rising from 20.2 to 95µg/m 3 by 2060. Under BEV adoption scenario, emission and concentration are significantly reduced, potentially preventing up to 110,000 premature deaths under Scenario I and around 700,000 under net zero pathway (Scenarios II and III). These findings highlight the co-benefit of accelerating transport electrification for better air quality and public health in Indonesia.

Alternative Incentive Policies against Purchase Subsidy Decrease for Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Adoption

The purchase subsidy policy gives powerful support in battery electric vehicles’ (BEVs) market penetration. However, the purchase subsidy is also a huge financial burden for the government, so it can only be considered as a transitional measure and will be canceled gradually. This paper aims to investigate the impact of purchase subsidy phase-out on BEV adoptions and explore alternative incentive policies to continue stimulating BEV adoptions. A stated preference (SP) survey is conducted in Beijing, and a binary logit (BL) model is established to describe how various factors affect BEV adoption preferences. In addition to the factors related to vehicle techniques, the policies of license plate restrictions and driving restrictions are focused due to Beijing’s unique external policy environment. The vehicle use subsidy and bus line driving permit are tested as alternative incentive policies against the purchase subsidy decrease. The results show that incentive policies can significantly influence BEV adoption intentions. If the purchase subsidy policy is canceled in Beijing, the BEV choice probability will be reduced from 45.94% to 16.62%. In this case, the vehicle use subsidy needs to be set at the level of 4966 CNY/year (714.3 USD/year) to maintain the original BEV choice probability.

This study integrates behavioral theories to examine battery electric vehicle (BEV) adoption in Indonesia, incorporating financial incentives to address gaps in understanding consumer motivation. A survey of 304 respondents analyzed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) reveals that attitude towards behavior and perceived behavioral control significantly influence BEV adoption, while financial incentives, though impactful, do not directly drive intention. This means that consumers who have a positive perception of BEVs and feel confident in their ability to own and use them are more likely to adopt, regardless of financial incentives. However, key barriers such as charging infrastructure limitations, range anxiety, and limited consumer awareness prevent widespread adoption, indicating that monetary incentives alone are insufficient. To effectively promote BEV adoption, policymakers should complement financial incentives with cost-reduction strategies like battery leasing programs, targeted fleet incentives, and local production subsidies, alongside infrastructure expansion and consumer engagement through education and test-drive initiatives. This study provides actionable insights to design effective policies for accelerating BEV adoption and transitioning to sustainable transportation in Indonesia.

Beyond Climate Change Concern: Why Air Pollution Health Concern and Health Orientation Matter in Battery Electric Vehicle Adoption

While previous research has emphasized climate change concern as a driver of battery electric vehicle (BEV) adoption, concerns about the personal health impacts of air pollution caused by internal combustion vehicles—such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases—have been neglected as behavioral triggers. Our findings from a representative US survey ( N = 800) show that, besides climate change concern, health concern about air pollution significantly influences BEV adoption intention. Furthermore, health orientation moderates this relationship, with highly health‐oriented individuals showing a stronger positive effect of air pollution health concern on BEV adoption. For highly health‐oriented individuals, air pollution health concern has a stronger influence than climate change concern. These findings highlight the importance of emphasizing personal health benefits alongside environmental benefits in marketing and policy strategies. Further findings of the study show that adoption barriers, such as high costs and infrastructure limitations, remain significant deterrents to the switch to electric mobility. Increasing awareness of the noxious health impacts of pollution caused by internal combustion engines and promoting health awareness, together with overcoming the known adoption barriers, can accelerate the transition to sustainable electric mobility, contributing to climate change mitigation while enhancing public health outcomes.

Potential differences among developed and emerging countries regarding the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) adoption are highlighted in the literature. However, most studies focus on factors influencing BEV penetration in mature markets. In this paper, we explore the spatial adoption of electric vehicles and its determinants using data from Hungary, an emerging country. We show that spatial heterogeneities in the adoption rates of BEVs are important. Without taking these heterogeneities into account, only the fast chargers exhibit significant positive effects on BEV registration rate. We show that other local conditions, such as income and urbanization are also important factors explaining the new BEV registration rate.

Environmental and economic impact of electric vehicle adoption in the U.S

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have received increasing attention in recent years as BEV technical capabilities have rapidly developed. While many studies have attempted to investigate the societal impacts of BEV adoption, there is still a limited understanding of the extent to which widespread adoption of BEVs may affect both environmental and economic variables simultaneously. This study intends to address this research gap by conducting a comprehensive impact assessment of BEV adoption. Using demand estimates derived from a discrete choice experiment, the impact of various scenarios is evaluated using a computable general equilibrium model. Three drivers of BEV total cost of ownership are considered, namely, subsidy levels, cash incentives by manufacturers, and fuel costs. Furthermore, in light of current trends, improvements in BEV battery manufacturing productivity are considered. This research shows that changes in fuel price and incentives by manufacturers have relatively low impacts on GDP growth, but that the effect of subsidies on GDP and on BEV adoption is considerable, due to a stimulus effect on both household expenditures and on vehicle-manufacturing-related sectors. Productivity shocks moderately impact GDP but only affect BEV adoption in competitive markets. Conversely, the environmental impact is more nuanced. Although BEV adoption leads to decreases in tailpipe emissions, increased manufacturing activity as a result of productivity increases or subsidies can lead to growth in non-tailpipe emissions that cancels out some or all of the tailpipe emissions savings. This demonstrates that in order to achieve desired emissions reductions, policies to promote BEV adoption with subsidies should be accompanied by green manufacturing and green power generation initiatives.

Are They All Equal? Uncovering Adopter Groups of Battery Electric Vehicles

Battery Electric Vehicles are regarded as highly important to reach environmental goals, such as CO2 savings in the transport sector. Despite governments making strong efforts to encourage their adoption and diffusion, sales still remain at a notoriously low level. One of the reasons may be the lack of a deeper understanding of the differences among potential adopters of Battery Electric Vehicles. To close this research gap, the authors segment adopter groups in a new way. They simultaneously use preferences for product attributes and personal characteristics to identify and characterize adopter groups of Battery Electric Vehicles. In this way, adopters can be effectively segmented, uncovering a more precise picture of adopters’ needs. Moreover, the authors introduce a three-step-procedure combining inputs from an adaptive choice-based conjoint experiment with a questionnaire. This approach can be used to segment adopter groups of other eco-innovations, as well. Based on three adopter groups of Battery Electric Vehicles (Utilitarian Savers, Performance Seekers, and Green Technologists), the authors develop tailored measures for decision-makers in policy and management to foster the adoption and diffusion of Battery Electric Vehicles.

This thesis aims to find out all factors influencing the rate of adoption of a battery electric vehicle by using the main constructs and important concepts of theory of diffusion of innovations proposed by Rogers (1962). The results indicate that seven factors influence the rate of adoption of a battery electric vehicle including social pressure, social prestige, usefulness for environment, difficultly of use, price, perceived risk, and knowledge and information about battery electric vehicles. Based on these factors, a road map and a set of policies to accelerate the rate of adoption of battery electric vehicles were proposed.

From Intention to Actual Behavior to Adopt Battery Electric Vehicles: A Systematic Literature Review

Background: Climate change and global warming are severely impacting countries worldwide. Governments are being urged to promote Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) as an alternative to conventional vehicles, which are one of the main sources of emissions and pollution. Despite their environmental benefits, BEV adoption remains at a low level. Therefore, identifying the determinants of BEV adoption is necessary to promote greener transportation. Objective: This study aims at identifying and synthesizing factors affecting BEV adoption intention and actual behavior. A comparison and analysis will be made to draw meaningful results and suggest future research areas. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted. Data were collected from research articles in peer-reviewed journals of well-known publishers. After a strict qualification process, 45 studies were selected and their findings are critically discussed. Results: Most studies are quantitative in nature and conducted in BEV developed markets. Various determinants of BEV adoption intention were identified and classified into 5 categories: psychological, behavioral, product attributes, contextual, and demographic. Meanwhile, only a few studies examine BEV's actual adoption behavior. Antecedents of adoption behavior were categorized into 4 groups, namely, psychological, behavioral, contextual, and demographic. Conclusion: BEV adoption can be influenced by both internal and external factors. There is a gap in research between intention and behavior in previous studies related to BEV adoption. While determinants of intention are the topic of many studies, actual behavior is more important but limitedly explored. Future research can focus on adoption behavior in newly developed markets with real data rather than utilizing self-reported responses to better analyze actual behavior.

What Influences Chinese Consumers’ Adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles? A Preliminary Study Based on Factor Analysis

The rapid development of automobile industry in China did improve people’s quality of life. However, it has also damaged the ecological environment. The emission of a large amount of automobiles is one of the serious air pollution sources. In recent years, the shortage of petrochemical energy, the rapid rise of harmful particles in the air (e.g., PM2.5 and PM10), and the increasing worse atmospheric environment are becoming obstacles to China’s sustainable development. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are recognized as an ideal alternative to conventional cars. This study aims to explore the factors that can promote consumers’ adoption of BEVs and to construct domains of these factors. Firstly, an open web questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were conducted to widely collect factors that promote consumers’ purchase of BEVs. Then, questionnaire survey and exploratory factor analysis were used to construct domains of promoting consumers’ purchasing willingness. A total of six factors that promote consumers’ adoption of BEVs were obtained. Finally, the research results can provide references for the Chinese government and the BEV manufacturers in the development and promotion of EVs.

Analysis of the Impact of Welding on Air Quality and Public Health in Indonesia

Welding is a process that produces gas and particulate emissions that can affect air quality and public health. This study aimed to analyze the impact of welding on air quality and public health in Indonesia, using data from various sources and statistical methods. The results showed that welding increased the concentration of air pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, O3, and CO in several big cities in Indonesia, especially Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung and Medan. Welding also harms public health by increasing the risk of respiratory, cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and neurological disorders. This study recommends several steps to reduce the impact of welding on air quality and public health in Indonesia, such as using welding technology that is more environmentally friendly, implementing strict emission standards, monitoring and controlling air quality, and increasing public awareness and education about the dangers of welding.

Analysing the usage and evidencing the importance of fast chargers for the adoption of battery electric vehicles

An appropriate charging infrastructure is one of the key aspects needed to support the mass adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and it is suggested that publically available fast chargers could play a key role in this infrastructure. As fast charging is a relatively new technology, very little research is conducted on the topic using real world datasets, and it is of utmost importance to measure actual usage of this technology and provide evidence on its importance to properly inform infrastructure planning. 90,000 fast charge events collected from the first large-scale roll-outs and evaluation projects of fast charging infrastructure in the UK and the US and 12,700 driving days collected from 35 BEVs in the UK were analysed. Using multiple regression analysis, we examined the relationship between daily driving distance and standard and fast charging and demonstrated that fast chargers are more influential. Fast chargers enabled using BEVs on journeys above their single-charge range that would have been impractical using standard chargers. Fast chargers could help overcome perceived and actual range barriers, making BEVs more attractive to future users. At current BEV market share, there is a vital need for policy support to accelerate the development of fast charge networks.
