Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides some insights into the functional role of plant diversity in grasslands. It then presents a trait-based approach to species functioning, and shows how it can be used, in combination with community structure, to infer some properties of ecosystems, and to serve as a basis for grassland management. A simplified scheme of the response-effect framework incorporating ecosystem services provided by grasslands is presented. The management practices in grassland and the trait response to management practices and community structure are discussed.
