Abstract
This study explored a structural approach to assessing students' accounting knowledge. An “expertise” knowledge structure of basic financial accounting concepts was constructed, and students' knowledge structures of the same concepts were then compared with the “expertise” knowledge structure. Data were collected from respondents at a large public university to demonstrate the procedure and method of analysis. The procedure has the potential for providing accounting programs with valuable information regarding their students' knowledge after completing a course or program of study.
