Global Warming and Climate Change
  • Jan 1, 2018
  • Kijpokin Kasemsap

This chapter indicates the advanced issues of global warming, the significant aspects of climate change, climate change and crop production, climate change and risk issues, and the public perceptions of climate change. Global warming and climate change are the important environmental concerns that have a major impact on various environmental perspectives. The effects and impacts of global warming are climate change, sea level change, water balance, and human health. The problems of global warming and climate change can be controlled by minimizing the emission of greenhouse gases into the environment through conducting laws, reducing thermal power generating stations, planting trees, and sharing vehicles. Global warming and climate change must be recognized by local governments and environment-related international organizations in order to find the effective approaches to reducing their impacts in environmental settings.

  • N K Z Alfadhly + 6 more

Sustainable agriculture is a type of agriculture which, in addition to producing food and agricultural products, is also economically advantageous for farmers, socially correct, respectful of nature and the environment. Sustainable agriculture contributes to improving the quality of life of both farmers and society. Climate change, economic development and social equity influence the sustainable agriculture and require complex and shared solutions on a large scale. Sustainable agriculture includes different meanings, such as environmental, social and economic perspective. The environmental perspective is related to the development of virtuous processes that respect the planet's resources, the healthiness of the soil and water, guaranteeing the maintenance of biodiversity and avoiding the use of pesticides and chemical agents. The social and economic perspective is the ability to meet the global demand of both industrialized and developing countries by ensuring the improvement of the protection of human rights and solidarity-based economic development, the quality of life of farmers, the ethical treatment of animals. The aim of this work is to discuss the implications and perspectives of sustainable agriculture in relation to food production.

The Valuation of Ecosystem Services in the Venice Lagoon: A Multicriteria Approach
  • Aug 24, 2021
  • Sustainability
  • Chiara D’Alpaos + 1 more

Coastal ecosystems are among the most economically valuable and highly threatened on Earth; they provide valuable ecosystem services (ESs) but are severely exposed to climate changes and human pressure. Although the preservation of coastal ecosystems is of the utmost importance, it is often sub-optimally pursued by Governments and Societies because of the high costs involved. We consider salt-marsh ecosystems in the Venice Lagoon as an example of a threatened landscape, calling for innovative, integrated management strategies, and propose an application-driven methodological framework to support policymakers in the identification of cost-effective incentive policies to ecosystem preservation. By combining group decision-making and Value-Focused-Thinking approaches, we provide a multiple-criteria decision model, based on pairwise comparisons, to identify which ESs are top-priority policy targets according to a cost-effective perspective. We implemented an online Delphi survey process and interviewed a pool of experts who identified “recreation and tourism”, “coastal protection from flooding”, “carbon storage”, “biodiversity and landscape”, and “nursery habitats for fisheries” as the five most relevant ESs for the Venice Lagoon taking into consideration the Environmental, Economic, and Social perspectives. Our results suggest that the Environmental perspective is the most important criteria, whereas “biodiversity and landscape” is acknowledged as the most important ES.

Assess the level of farmers' awareness regarding climate changes and its impacts on agriculture in Sétif province (north-east Algeria)
  • Jan 1, 2024
  • Bulletin of the Serbian Geographical Society
  • Samir Nasri + 2 more

The present study presents the phenomenon of climate changes through discussing its impacts on agriculture productions in S?tif Province, which is area of survey that located in the high plains of north-east Algeria. The study focuses to evaluate the perception degree of peasants toward the phenomenon via statistical analysis and discuss its futures challenges. It is presumed that climate changes have a significant effect on agriculture in the region; the water usage was increased in agriculture and the expansion of saline areas has increase soil degradation. Still, the vegetable and fruit crops reporting negative impacts living organisms are experiencing imbalances in natural biodiversity. In other point, the findings indicate that over half of the participants farmers (63.00%) have a moderate level of knowledge about climate changes, while 18.04% have a high level of knowledge. The status of the agriculture is in a critical condition and the findings indicate a relative gap in understanding the climate changes. Based on, some challenges have been revealed mainly: highlighting the need for effective dissemination of agricultural recommendations to improve farmers' knowledge that can support adaptation and mitigation toward climate change effects. In parallel, the agriculture is in need of continuous follow-up survey in the context of climate changes and socio-economic aspect to assure the quality of life in rural area and guaranteeing food security, where the environmental perspectives and sustainable development should be considered in the future spatial planning.

On climate, conflict and cumulation: suggestions for integrative cumulation of knowledge in the research on climate change and violent conflict
  • Jul 25, 2014
  • Global Change, Peace & Security
  • Tobias Ide + 1 more

Possible links between climate change and intra-state violent conflict have received major scholarly attention in recent years. But with few exceptions there is still a low level of consensus in this research field. The article argues that one reason for this disagreement is a lack of integrative cumulation of knowledge. Such an integrative cumulation is prevented by three obstacles, which have until now hardly been discussed in the literature. The first is the use of inadequate terms, discussed here with a focus on the labels ‘Malthusian’/‘cornucopian’ and the operationalization of key variables. Secondly, the weaknesses of large-N studies in research on climate change and violent conflict are not sufficiently reflected. These include a lack of data on crucial concepts as well as deficits of widely used datasets. Thirdly, literature that deals with a possible link between adverse environmental change and peace (termed here ‘environmental peace perspective’) has neither been systematized nor adequately considered in the debate so far. The article provides examples of these shortcomings and makes suggestions of how to address each of them. It also develops an integrative theoretical framework for the environmental peace perspective which facilitates its consideration in research on climate change and violent conflict.

Framing Food Transition: The Debate on Meat Production and Climate Change in Three European Countries
  • Dec 2, 2022
  • Social Sciences
  • Dolors Palau-Sampio + 2 more

The link between meat production and climate change has fostered increasing social debate in recent years. Livestock is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, among other global problems attached to the meat industry. However, this debate is often presented as one-dimensional, without a comprehensive approach. As the media plays a key role in shaping public perceptions of nutrition, this study aims to examine how the matter of food transition and climate change is addressed by three centre-left media outlets from Germany (Der Tagesspiegel), the United Kingdom (The Guardian) and Spain (El País). A search including the words *meat* and *climate change* in different languages, performed over one year (2021), resulted in a sample of available news items (N = 273). Using quantitative and qualitative methods, we analysed the coverage in terms of scope and use of frames. The results showed a scant number of news items combining climate change and meat consumption, though there were some differences indicating a greater awareness in the United Kingdom. Most of the news items from the three countries applied frames based on solutions from an environmental perspective. Media attention was discontinuous and sometimes determined by political debates, which made it difficult to reflect upon the underlying issues.
