Abstract

Following a replication of Cairns's 1973 linguistic ambiguity experiment, a funnel type questionnaire was given to subjects to assess their awareness of ambiguity. Results showed that virtually every subject discovered the presence of ambiguity early in the course of the experiment. Since awareness diminishes subject naivete and stimulates problem-solving behavior, it was argued that the basic language-processing models used to explain earlier research of this sort are probably incorrect.
