Abstract

Yen Le Espiritu describes Asian American panethnicity as ”the development of bridging organizations and solidarities among several ethnic and immigrant groups of Asian ancestry.”’ Espiritu depicts panethnicity as a political and social construction, heavily influenced by the continuing discrimination and oppression of racial minorities. Although there are centrifugal forces that threaten ethnic conflict, Espiritu is confident in the continual development of Asian panethnicity. As long as outside forces treat and perceive Asians as a “race,” and as long as Asian Americans can benefit from fusion and shared identification, Espiritu believes that panethnicity will continue to evolve as a dynamic and powerful center of identity. Since Asian Americans are treated as racial minorities and because they proactively forge new identities, panethnicity should become evident in the most consciousness-related and intimate of relationships-marriages.
