Artificial intelligence and international business: Theoretical challenges, strategic implications, and research agenda
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • Journal of World Business
  • Peter J Buckley + 5 more

This perspective article explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the theoretical foundations and strategic dynamics of international business (IB). We distinguish between predictive AI, generative AI, and agentic AI, examining how each transforms the behavior of multinational enterprises (MNEs). Moving beyond viewing AI as merely transactional or infrastructural technology, we conceptualize it as a cognitive substrate that transforms how MNEs learn, innovate, develop resources and capabilities, and make decisions across borders. By augmenting and partially substituting managerial cognition, AI reconfigures firm-specific and location-specific advantages, while challenging core assumptions of established IB frameworks and altering the governance of cross-border activities. AI also transforms global value chains through enhanced coordination, resilience, and transparency, yet it simultaneously introduces new risks related to algorithmic bias, sustainability, and dependency on digital infrastructures. The paper discusses the implications of AI adoption for MNEs and argues that existing IB theories may need to be complemented by new perspectives to account for AI disruption. The paper concludes by proposing a research agenda that integrates theoretical, strategic, institutional, and methodological insights for understanding AI’s transformative impact on IB.

  • Lin Feng

The expansion of the e-commerce sector beyond international boundaries has opened up new opportunities in international business. The first and most important problem for international e-commerce businesses is choosing the right products to sell. Scientific product selection is important not only for the smooth running of international e-commerce businesses, but also for the growth and development of thriving private labels. With development for Internet and rapid rise of e-commerce platforms, online shopping has become mainstream. While consumers are deeply involved, a large number of user comments appear on the Internet, and these online shopping comments often contain a lot of valuable information. Cross-border e-commerce can get useful suggestions and feedback about products through sentiment analysis of these texts. This can also find product problems, improve where they are not in place, and improve operational efficiency. This work studies the selection strategy of cross-border e-commerce products assisted by artificial intelligence technology. This paper uses artificial intelligence technology to conduct sentiment analysis of product reviews, which can help cross-border e-commerce companies make effective product selection. This work proposes CNN-BiGRU-ATT for sentiment polarity analysis of product reviews. First, the multi-channel convolutional neural network is utilized to extract local feature of different granularities. Then connect BiGRU for context sequence learning to memorize long-distance dependency information. This method not only solves the problem that CNN cannot perform context sequence learning, but also solves issue of gradient disappearance or explosion. Finally, attention is introduced after the BiGRU hidden layer to filter the important features.

Is AI really valuable for European companies? The market impact of AI project announcements
  • Dec 25, 2025
  • Critical Perspectives on International Business
  • Leonard Grebe + 2 more

Purpose Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to disrupt international businesses processes. However, given the complexity and inherent risks associated with AI investments, it remains debatable whether such projects offer tangible benefits to firms. In the global discussion, this paper aims to add an European perspective for international businesses by analyzing the value effects of AI project announcements by European companies. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on an event study methodology to test for abnormal market returns around the announcement of AI projects by European companies. The market perception is further controlled for differences in AI projects like additional strategic partnerships, industry-fixed effects and success in implementation. Findings Contrary to expectations, this event study finds no significant abnormal market reactions to AI project announcements by European companies on general. Project-specific characteristics also do not appear to meaningfully influence investor perception. However, the authors observe clear industry-specific effects: the automotive sector exhibits a comparatively positive market response, while pharmaceutical and telecommunications firms also show above-average abnormal returns around the announcement date. These findings suggest that investors evaluate AI initiatives in Europe through a sector-specific lens, resulting in diverging market reactions. Overall, the results further challenge assumptions about the uniformly US-centric valuation of AI announcements. Practical implications The findings suggest that European managers should align AI announcements with clear, sector-specific innovation strategies to enhance credibility and investor confidence. However, to ensure broader societal benefit, AI strategies must be inclusive, avoiding the concentration of value in select sectors. These insights highlight the need for context-sensitive approaches to AI communication and implementation across Europe independent from the US role model. Social implications The findings highlight the heterogeneous interpretation of AI projects across sectors in Europe. The sector-specific nature of investor reactions suggests that firms must adopt tailored AI communication strategies that resonate with the expectations and realities of their respective industries. This underscores the broader societal importance of fostering public trust in AI, not just as a technological innovation, but as a tool for meaningful and inclusive social and economic progress. Originality/value This study contradicts the common understanding of market perception on AI projects from the USA and adds a European perspective, which indicates that the value of AI projects differentiates geographically.
