This chapter distills lessons learned from the common threads of these forks in the digital road. It then moves in a normative direction to discuss not the Internet that exists, but the one that the world deserves, including the prospects for cyber peace, and how these insights can be deployed to ensure that the right digital forks are taken given new technologies such as the Internet of Things, and the Metaverse. The chapter maps the topics and trends of the key decision points from the past to contemporary debates about how to better manage cybersecurity, privacy, disinformation, and critical infrastructure. Reflecting on those past choices can help inform how to build a global culture of cybersecurity, along with whether and how to regulate artificial intelligence. Applying lessons learned from the 20th century can chart a path toward a more sustainable, secure, and equitable Internet for the 21st century.
