Abstract

Some organisms use microbes to help defend themselves from parasites or pathogens. Fungus-growing ants defend the fungal mutualist they cultivate for food from the specialized fungal parasite Escovopsis. Francoeur and colleagues (e00178-21) demonstrate that Burkholderia species that occur within the fungus garden microbiome produce two antifungals, pyrrolnitrin and burkholdine, that together inhibit Escovopsis. This work suggests that common bacterial fungus garden inhabitants may play a role in suppressing the growth of Escovopsis and contributing to overall colony health.
