Abstract

The University of Iowa’s Visual Arts Building opened last fall on a campus that is still recovering from flooding in 2008 that caused nearly $800 million in damage. The structure houses the university’s studio arts education program and is a physical manifestation of the theories that will be taught within its walls. Boasting offset floor plates and perimeter cutouts, the building itself is a piece of art composed of both volumes and voids.
