Abstract

Where demand for argon cannot be met as a by-product of oxygen production, ammonia-plant purge gas can provide an alternative source of feed gas. By using Petrocarbon Technology, Costain Oil, Gas & Process Ltd have recently commissioned their first such plant on the AMC plant at Verdigris in Oklahoma. The cryogenic process has an overall argon recovery exceeding 97%, meeting CGA grade E specification (less than 7.5 ppm total impurities). The liquid argon production of 33 t d −1 is stored in a 210 m 3 horizontal vacuum-insulated tank and can be pumped to either road trailer or railcar for distribution. The cryogenic process also produces hydrogen which is recycled at 92% purity and 94% recovery to the ammonia-plant synthesis loop thereby boosting ammonia production.
