Abstract

Possibilities of supervising counseling practicum students through small group meetings are described. Some of the challenges, problems, and opportunities involved are delineated. Certain behavior of the supervisor in managing group discussion and interaction can be viewed in terms of 4 possible areas or subjects of focus: the training agency (practicum), the clients being counseled by practicum students, the students themselves, and the dynamics and development of the supervisory group. Many opportunities are available for broadening or narrowing the focus, and thus the context, of discussions of issues arising in the group. Examples are presented from a single group supervisory session.
