Abstract
Background: Generational change and technical development influence learning styles leading to the current popularity of e-learning. Development and acquisition of electronic learning materials can be time consuming and expensive. We investigated the utilization of web-based study material among general surgery residents. Methods: A web-based interactive study guide for the American Board of Surgery In-training Examination -ABSITE was provided free of charge for a 2 months period prior to the examination date to all residents in a general surgery residency program. Residents were informed of the availability during mandatory conferences and via e-mail to each resident. At the end of the time period a survey was used to assess utilization by and perceived usefulness for the residents. Results: Of 45 categorical residents, 31 returned the survey (69%). The mean age of the residents was 31 years, 25 men and 6 women responded. 15 residents stated that they logged on to the web based service (48%), 16 had not. There was no difference in gender or post graduate year between web-users and non-users. Of the residents that used the service 80% found it easy to use, and 73% found it helpful in there preparation for the ABSITE. The average length per session was 1 hour; the mean frequency of usage was 5 sessions (range 1 - >10). The estimated total resident time spent with the program was 75 hours over the 2 months period. The mean score for the ABSITE of the training program did not change. The estimated cost of the program is $7.500 - $15.000/year. Conclusion: Educational research suggests that the current generation of learners is very techno-literate, prefers email based communication and web-based learning styles. The results of this study do not support these findings for general surgery residents in this one program. More studies will be necessary to evaluate the applicability of electronic educational materials for surgery residents.
