Archives Curriculum in the Global South: A Caribbean Perspective
When a small group of archivists met in Jamaica in 2013 to craft an Archives program for the Department of Library and Information Studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI), their major challenge was the localization and Caribbeanization of an archives curriculum developed by standards in North America and the United Kingdom. Even though most of this group of Caribbean archivists had received their professional education overseas and were conditioned by Western education, their practical experiences at home had sensitized them to the need for a curriculum that would accommodate, celebrate the non-traditional records, records formats and record-making environment of the Caribbean region.The challenges implicit in localizing curriculum in the Global South are delineated and Caribbeanizing the developing UWI curriculum is tracked from the earliest discussions to the fully-fledged curriculum of today. An extended definition of Caribeanization is joined to illustrations from the programme structure to demonstrate how Caribbeanization has been implemented throughout the curriculum, offering curriculum models that can be adapted to other regions in the Global South.

The introduction of the landmark mandatory teaching of sign language to undergraduate dental students at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica, to bridge the communication gap between dentists and their patients is reviewed. A review of over 90 Doctor of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Dental Medicine curricula in North America, the United Kingdom, parts of Europe and Australia showed no inclusion of sign language in those curricula as a mandatory component. In Jamaica, the government's training school for dental auxiliaries served as the forerunner to the UWI's introduction of formal training of sign language in 2012. Outside of the UWI, a couple of dental schools have sign language courses, but none have a mandatory programme as the one at the UWI. Dentists the world over have had to rely on interpreters to sign with their deaf patients. The deaf in Jamaica have not appreciated the fact that dentists cannot sign and they have felt insulted and only go to the dentist in emergency situations. The mandatory inclusion of sign language in the Undergraduate Dental Programme curriculum at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, sought to establish a direct communication channel to formally bridge this gap. The programme of two sign language courses and a direct clinical competency requirement was developed during the second year of the first cohort of the newly introduced undergraduate dental programme through a collaborating partnership between two faculties on the Mona Campus. The programme was introduced in 2012 in the third year of the 5-year undergraduate dental programme. To date, two cohorts have completed the programme, and the preliminary findings from an ongoing clinical study have shown a positive impact on dental care access and dental treatment for deaf patients at the UWI Mona Dental Polyclinic. The development of a direct communication channel between dental students and the deaf that has led to increased dental access and treatment for the deaf can be extended to dentists and to other dental students globally. The vision is that similar courses will be introduced in other health training programmes at the UWI, and conceivably, in other institutions. The small sample size allows for informative, but not definitive, conclusions to be drawn. The mandatory inclusion of sign language and Deaf culture in the dental curricula has not just removed a communication barrier, but has assisted in the empathetic and ethical development of the dental student.

Purpose Collection content is no longer the primary distinctive signifier of excellence in the present libraries. In an information market where technology has increased access to content, thereby providing resources at one’s fingertips, the provision of services is increasingly becoming a distinctive signifier of excellence and quality. In such an open/service-oriented marketplace, what are the services that are signifiers of excellence and consequently distinguish a library? This paper aims to review select literature within the USA to identify the services that are signifiers of excellence and that will consequently distinguish a library in the current era and investigate the extent to which said services identified in the review of the literature are provided by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona library, but focus specifically on only those that meet the additional criteria of placing the UWI Mona library as either the first to introduce the service in Jamaica or as the only library in Jamaica with the particular service offering. These two additional criteria provide the added signature or uniqueness essential to being distinguished. Design/methodology/approach Through the use of a mixed methods research, this paper highlights library service offerings considered as distinctive signifiers of excellence within the American literature and also within the UWI Mona Library – that will distinguish a library. Findings This paper reveals services incorporating technology, the library as a place/space, teaching and research and personal attention to users as distinctive signifiers of excellence. In this regard, within the UWI Mona Library, services offered such as the Virtual Reference Service, Extended Opening Service, Halls of Residence Librarian Service, Information Commons Service, Information Literacy Service and the West Indies and Special Collection Research Service were found to incorporate the aforementioned service themes and placed the UWI Mona library as either the first to introduce the service in Jamaica or as the only library in Jamaica with the particular service offering, consequently distinguishing the UWI Mona Library from other academic libraries in Jamaica. Originality/value This paper is of value, as it provides the library and information community with an outline of services that distinguish a library; it offers library managers in Jamaica and the rest of the world the opportunity to compare services in their libraries with that of other libraries as outlined within the literature review as well as within the UWI Mona library; it highlights how the UWI Mona library, an academic library in the Caribbean, compares on the international library scene, with particular reference to the USA; it informs current and potential library users of how the UWI Mona library is trending in service culture and a focus on distinctive services can promote a community of academic library service best practice.

COVID-19 is a pandemic that has affected health care personnel worldwide. Dentists have a high risk of contracting COVID-19 given the face-to-face contact required in daily interactions with their patients. This study aimed to determine the stressors experienced by academic dentists due to the COVID-19 situation in Trinidad and Jamaica. All academic staff at the University of the West Indies (UWI) dental schools (St. Augustine and Mona campuses) were invited to complete a self-reported questionnaire, which was conducted for one month from May to June 2020. Thirty-two dental academics responded and the response rate was 61.54%. More than a third (34.4%) were in the 25–35 age group, 71.9% were females. The most common speciality (20.7%) was restorative dentistry. Just over one-third (38.7%) had been in academia for 5–10 years. Most (40.6%) were apprehensive about infecting their family. When the locus of control was determined, just over half (53.1%) felt they were in control of protecting themselves while 34.4% felt that external factors controlled their lives. The findings suggest that academic staff at UWI dental schools (Trinidad and Jamaica) were stressed by the COVID-19 situation. The vast majority were worried about infecting their families.

Introduction The centrality of behaviour change in combating HIV has been recognized since the beginning of the epidemic. One of the most widespread approaches to behaviour change used in the battle against HIV/AIDS has been information, education and communication (IEC) campaigns focused on raising awareness about the virus and the syndrome, avoiding behaviours associated with increased risk, and providing behavioural strategies for the caregivers of people with AIDS (UNAIDS, 1999a). Sexual transmission is clearly the dominant mode of transmission accounting for 75% of all cases of HIV transmission. Heterosexual transmission is globally the most common mode of HIV spread. The University of the West Indies Medical Students Association (UWlMSA) and the International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA) Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including AIDS (SCORA) acknowledges that young people are central to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Research data that seeks to reveal and educate medical students and the wider community about risk factors to contracting HIV/AIDS is important to the work of UWIMSA. We aim to understand the behaviours that drive the increasing rate of HIV/AIDS amongst our young people. SCORA has always been of the belief that we need to move from information to action, to come up with effective interventions to achieve desired outcomes by changing behaviour and by increasing individuals' sense of control over their own behaviours. For information to make sense and be useful to members of the IFMSA, it must be easily integrated into our social expectations, norms, and values as well as our political and economic culture. It must be applicable to our everyday lives, and presented in a narrative form. SCORA has promoted safe sex campaigns and condom exhibitions throughout the world through IFMSA national member organizations (NMOs). We believe that we can be our own role models and hence act as role models to young people. Throughout the world behaviour change is necessary at all levels and this research paper seeks to highlight the positives and the negatives about knowledge, attitudes and sexual practices of medical students towards HIV/AIDS. Objectives 1. To determine knowledge of HIV/AIDS amongst medical students attending the International Federation of Medical Students Associa tions (IFMSA) 52nd annual march meeting in Parmi Estonia with regards to: a. Modes of Transmission b. Methods of prevention c. Causative agent of the disease 2. To determine the behaviour of students with regard to sexual practices 3. To determine the attitudes of Medical students toward people with HIV/AIDS 4. To make a comparison with the UWI study on: Knowledge and Attitudes of UWI Students Towards HIV/AIDS Materials This study was done in Parmi Estonia amongst medical students from 32 countries at the 52nd International conference of the International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA) on March 2nd to 8th, 2003. The research took the form of self administered questionnaires by students from 32 countries at the conference. The sample was an incidental one given out to members of the different National member organizations (NMO). This research was previously done at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in February 200 and the data was compared to the UWI study. Results Demographics The Gender distribution The ratio was almost 1:1 Male to female as compared with the 1:2 ratio for the UWI study. Age 80.2% of the respondents were in the age range 21-24 years compared to 31.4% in the UWI study. 53.4% of the respondents in the UWI study were less than 21 years, a younger population. Population densities on seagrass blades were measured using the mass of dried leaves. On other substrates, population densities were computed as the number of foraminifera per gram of detritus (diatom frustrules, sand, particulate organic matter) washed from the plants. Densities on the heads (capitulae) of the alga Penicillus capitatus in both bays were three times higher than those on either the alga Halimeda opuntia or on exposed seagrass (Syringodium filiforme, Thalassia testinudum) rhizomes and basal leaf bosses. The input of organic matter into one bay may have impacted the assemblage species composition, but it did not affect population densities. The short life span of P. capitatus, coupled with the more dense populations it supports, implies that assemblages on this alga may contribute proportionally more foraminiferal tests to the sediment than do those on other plants.Population dynamics showed that entire foraminiferal communities on all plants fluctuated independently of one another, whether on different plants in the same bay or on the same plants in different bays. This suggests that nearshore foraminifera are patchily distributed and that the populations in the patches wax and wane independently. Population diversities fluctuated from month to month and were significantly higher in the polluted bay. However, monthly diversities and population densities were not correlated. Species dominance was greater in the windward, unpolluted bay. Differences in dominance within each bay suggest that Penicillus capitatus capitulae support a pioneering foraminiferal community, whereas long-lived seagrass rhizomes bear a climax community.
