Abstract

Archaeological Testing of 41KR243, the Camp Pearl Wheat Site, was performed between June 15 and June 20, 1988 by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highway and Public Transportation (SDHPT). The hand excavation of three 2 meter squares uncovered a hearth and a Martindale dart point from depths of 40 to 50 cm below the present surface. An additional hearth exposed in the road cut of FM 783 was uncovered and documented. The site contains a San Geronimo Phase (Weir 1976) component at 40 to 50 cm depth within the proposed right-of-way. The uppermost 30 cm of the deposits consist of dark gray to black silty clays containing slight evidences of prehistoric habitations. Levels 4 and 5 are contained within a brown silty clay and exhibit traces of an Early Archaic habitation zone with hearths, projectile points, and lithic debitage. The site is thought to be eligible for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places and additional research is proposed within the right-of-way.
