Abstract

Approximate expressions for the stress intensity factor are developed by using the stress distribution before crack initiation for the thin plate bending and the plane elastic problems. An infinite plate with symmetric cracks at both corners of a rhombic hole is solved for loadings that are uniform out-of-plane bending and uniform tension at infinity. The stress distribution and the stress intensity factors are obtained for several corner angles and crack lengths. A rational mapping function of a sum of fractional expressions and complex stress functions are used.
