Abstract

Undoubtedly, the widest application of powder photography today is the identification of compounds — either singly or in mixtures. It has already been shown that the line spacings (and hence the corresponding d values) of a powder pattern depend only on the unit cell dimensions of the substance, while the intensity distribution of the lines is affected by the relative positions of atoms within the unit cell. Any combination of these two factors — the unit cell dimensions and the atomic arrangement — is unique to a particular element or compound; hence their recognition can lead directly to the identification of a substance.
