Abstract
Donor organ preservation is critical to the success of transplantation surgery. Static cold storage has traditionally been used ever since the beginning of transplantation surgery. Machine perfusion has been gaining popularity in recent two decades, especially oxygenated machine perfusion in donor organ preservation. Blood substitutes, also known as artificial oxygen carriers including hemoglobin-based and perfluorocarbon-based oxygen carriers, can potentially be utilized in oxygenated machine perfusion. Both hemoglobin-based and perfluorocarbon-based oxygen carriers have now been experimentally and clinically tested for the preservation of various donor organs including liver, kidney, pancreas, heart and lungs.
