Abstract

As a highly selective α2 adrenoceptor agonist, dexmedetomidine not only has sedative, analgesic and anxiolytic effects, but also has function of decreasing the release of inflammatory mediator and postoperative cognitive dysfunction. In recent years, as for the further research of its pharmacological action, more and more researchers have used dexmedetomidine in non-intravenous way, such as intranasal or epidural, which has effective remedy and less adverse reaction. The application of dexmedetomidine can make up for the insufficiency of traditional epidural block and improve the effect of block. Clinical application of dexmedetomidine on epidural block in the surgery of gynaecology and obstetrics, orthopedics and pediatrics is reviewed in this article.
