Abstract

This paper presents the application of Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) in the medium voltage range of 11 KV to improve power quality. The traditional Radial-Distribution Networks (RDN) agonize from heavy power loss, deprived voltage profile and voltage stability as well as high line-loadability. To improve the performance under such Power Quality (PQ) issues, a UPQC is connected as a compensating device. UPQC is a device that has two converters one is series-connected and another is shunt-connected with the system. UPQC can simultaneously mitigate voltage and current related issues. This paper presents UPQC which is capable to mitigate system harmonics generated due to voltage sag/swell and regulates the load voltage at the medium voltage level of radial distribution. In conventional UPQC topology, the two converters are coupled through a DC-link capacitor which is charged via DC-Battery (DCB). In this paper, DCB is replaced by Photo-Voltaic (PV). Hence the paper proposes a UPQC-PV topology that can improve the PQ of RDN and simultaneously integrates the PV into RDN. PV here energizes the converters of UPQC and also supplies the load at its rated capacity. The harmonic analysis is presented to analyse the performance of the system under various operating conditions.
