Abstract

With the increasing demand for transportation, more low speed large-scale trucks get onto expressways and force the following vehicles to decelerate, which leads to inefficient traffic flow. In view of this, this paper attempts to determine, based on the traffic flow wave theory, the state changes of traffic flow caused by on-road large-scale trucks. This is done through a quantitative analysis of the relationships among the length of lane occupied by large-scale trucks, the jamming time, and the blocked vehicles. The analysis indicates the extent to which the on-road trucks affect the traffic flow, and finally points out the importance of having a clear division of large-scale truck lanes. It also discusses the importance of the expressway minimum speed and that of the limited expressway truck proportion, with an aim to providing the basis for expressway mixed traffic flow management.
