Abstract

Abstract. Taguchi’s method is introduced to perform multiobjective optimization of fiber Raman amplifier (FRA).Theoptimizationrequirementsaretomaximizegainandkeepgainrippleminimumovertheoperatingbandwidthof a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) communication link. Mathematical formulations of FRA and corre-sponding numerical solution techniques are discussed. A general description of Taguchi’s method and how itcan be integrated with the FRA optimization problem are presented. The proposed method is used to optimizetwo different configurations of FRA. The performance of Taguchi’s method is compared with genetic algorithmand particle swarm optimization in terms of output performance and convergence rate. Taguchi’s method isfound to produce good results with fast convergence rate, which makes it well suited for the nonlinear optimi-zation problems. © 2016 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) [DOI: 10.1117/1.OE.55.4.046103] Keywords: Raman amplifier; Taguchi’s method; optimization.Paper 160173 received Feb. 4, 2016; accepted for publication Mar. 14, 2016; published online Apr. 7, 2016.
