Abstract

In this paper a new method for precise positioning is introduced. The principle of positioning method is based on the following well known kinematic phenomenon. When a small impulsive force is applied on one end of a solid body placed on a plane surface, the body will move in the direction of the force with a very small displacement. This phenomenon has scarcely been applied in factory automation since an apparatus that can supply an appropriately controlled impact has not been obtained. In this method, electromagnetic force which is produced between a coil and a conductive plate is used as the source of the impact. The waveform of this electromagnetic impulsive force can be controlled by an electric circuit. Experiments show that a rigid mass of 1 kg can be moved from 20 nm to 300 µm by one shot of the electric discharge according to the charged energy. As an application of this method, a precise Х,Ү,Θ stage is also developed by attaching eight impact generator units around a square solid block.
