Abstract

New solid-phase extraction cartridges ENVI-ChromP based on a non ionic styrene–divinyl benzene copolymer resin with a large specific surface 800–900 m2 g–1 were used to isolate chlorotriazine parent compounds and metabolites from water samples. Breakthrough experiments show that dealkylated chlorotriazines have high sorption capacity. Recoveries of 90–100% over a concentration range of 0.05–1 µg l–1 were obtained with relative standard deviations of between 2 and 5%(n= 6) at the 0.05 µg l–1 level. A good linearity was observed. The performance of the total analytical procedure was evaluated by analysing drinking- and river water. During optimization of the method some parameters, such as the influence of water pH and solvent efficiency in the elution step, are tested and discussed. The use of sorbent discs (10 mm, C18) was tested for the determination of chlorotriazine parents and metabolites, experimental results showed that the C18 discs are not suitable for off-line trace enrichment of polar herbicides when large water volumes are involved.
