Abstract

This appendix of the book The Raven and the Falcon presents a list of monographs that are apparently lost. Some of the monographs include Kitāb al-shayb wa-l-khiḍāb, by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿīd (first half of 2nd/8th century), Kitāb al-shaykh wa-l-ghulām, on tawḥīd (monotheism), by Hishām b. al-Ḥakam (d. 179/795-6 or later), Kitāb al-shabāb, by al-Haytham b. ʿAdī (d. ca. 209/821), and Kitāb al-muʿammarīn, by al-Haytham b. ʿAdī. The book studies the subject of youth versus old age in medieval Arabic literature, dispelling common misconceptions and providing relevant insight into its treatment in other literatures. In poetic imagery, youth is identified with the black raven, old age with the white falcon. Keywords: black raven; medieval Arabic literature; monographs; white falcon
