Abstract

Summary Infection of Raji cells (human lymphoblastoid cells carrying the Epstein-Barr (EB) virus) with xenotropic retroviruses of different taxonomic subgroups activated the EB early antigens, which are normally not expressed in these cells. The viruses used were type C feline, baboon and Mus molossinus mouse endogenous viruses, type C gibbon ape virus, type D Mason Pfizer monkey virus and simian foamy virus type A. Syncytia formation was consistently observed in infected cultures. The significance of the antigen induction and possible mechanisms of action are discussed.
