Abstract

The Dominican Bernard Lambert was one of the central representatives of French figurism at the end of the 18th century, and was the author of numerous prophetic and political works. In 1796, during the reconstruction of the French church, he published La Vérité de la sainteté du christianisme (The Truth of the holiness of Christianity), which was the first refutation of the Origine de tous les cultes (Origin of all religious cults) of Charles-François Dupuis, the deputy of the National Convention. Esteemed equally by the adversaries of the Civil constitution of the clergy and by the editors of the Annales de la Religion (Annals of Religion), Lambert’s work affirms a conception of history that was linked to his own millenarian aspirations.
