Abstract

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent in children and adolescents. Although there are many similarities between youth and adult anxiety disorders, there are also important differences that must be considered. In this chapter we provide a brief background about anxiety disorders in youth and then discuss the anxiety disorders that are commonly seen in childhood and adolescence, how these disorders present in youth, and the diagnostic criteria and considerations relevant to these disorders. Our consideration is given to a discussion of treatment for these disorders, with a focus on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as the two treatments that have garnered research support for their efficacy in treating youth anxiety. We then address important developmental considerations in the assessment and the treatment of anxiety disorders in youth. We conclude with suggestions for future research on the topic of child and adolescent anxiety.
