Abstract

The chapter discusses non steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID). Although the development of gastric and duodenal ulcers is definitely associated with NSAID drug therapy, the mechanism by which these agents cause mucosal injury is partly determined. The combination of diuretics and NSAID is not unusual since many patients requiring NSAID are elderly and frequently require concomitant therapy for other diseases. The effect of NSAID upon the natriuretic and diuretic effects of loop diuretics is the most extensively documented. The interaction of NSAID with potassium sparing diuretics has been less extensively studied. NSAID can produce a whole spectrum of renal diseases, and functional renal insufficiency is probably the most common. These results from hemodynamic changes secondary to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by NSAID. Pyrazolone derivatives have been discussed. These affect the skin, urinary system, gastrointestinal systems, and others.
