In the early stages of research on the genetics of human morphological traits, particular attention was given to the details of the physical complexities of the face. In this field, prominent focus was placed on the characteristics of the auricle, especially the types of the earlobe (lobulus auriculae). This paper presents the first data on the previously undescribed possibility of inheriting the ossified granules of the antihelix. Based on genealogical analysis of the presence/absence of the granule across five successive generations of a Bosnian family, evidence is provided for the autosomal recessive inheritance of this dimorphism.

ACADEMIC STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME TO ENHANCE RESEARCH COMPETENCE: A CASE STUDY

Findings from this study include a summary of best practices in terms of Academic staff development programme (ASDP) to support the implementation of the Research modules to enhance the university teacher’s research competence. Mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) approach and the case study were used to explore the problem, to find out the result of Research modules implementing into the practical space where university teachers had the opportunity to engage in active training. The authors highlighted general principles of active/ research-based learning in practical space training environments, focused specifically on the content of Research modules for lectures – Early-Stage Researchers, Doctoral candidates (Gr. A, the RM I); for PhDholders, professors, doctoral degree holders (Gr. B, the RM II). The teaching and learning strategies used in the modules were a combination of workshops, case studies, small group discussions, pair peer review and independent study including a literature review of relevant research. The research has shown that competency enhancement programme with Research modules is effective and crucial for developing Academic staff research competence at universities. The evaluation of competence research components has revealed the positive changes and confirmed the effectiveness of the Research modules. The programs of the Modules have effectively contributed to the development of Academic staff research competence. The proposed ASDP can be applied to other universities. Some recommendations for Academic staff developers, Curriculum development managers, coaches are suggested for consideration and using to support the professional development of academic and research staff.

Use of LCA as a development tool within early research: challenges and issues across different sectors

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to highlight the challenges that face the use of life cycle assessment (LCA) for the development of emerging technologies. LCA has great potential for driving the development of products and processes with improved environmental credentials when used at the early research stage, not only to compare novel processing with existing commercial alternatives but to help identify environmental hotspots. Its use in this way does however provide methodological and practical difficulties, often exacerbated by the speed of analysis required to enable development decisions to be made. Awareness and understanding of the difficulties in such cases is vital for all involved with the development cycle.MethodsThis paper employs three case studies across the diverse sectors of nanotechnology, lignocellulosic ethanol (biofuel), and novel food processes demonstrating both the synergy of issues across different sectors and highlighting the challenges when applying LCA for early research. Whilst several researchers have previously highlighted some of the issues with use of LCA techniques at an early stage, most have focused on a specific product, process development, or sector. The use of the three case studies here is specifically designed to highlight conclusively that such issues are prevalent to use of LCA in early research irrespective of the technology being assessed.Results and discussionThe four focus areas for the paper are system boundaries, scaling issues, data availability, and uncertainty. Whilst some of the issues identified will be familiar to all LCA practitioners as problems shared with standard LCAs, their importance and difficulty is compounded by factors distinct to novel processes as emerging technology is often associated with unknown future applications, unknown industrial scales, and wider data gaps that contribute to the level of LCA uncertainty. These issues, in addition with others that are distinct to novel applications, such as the challenges of comparing laboratory scale data with well-established commercial processing, are exacerbated by the requirement for rapid analysis to enable development decisions to be made.ConclusionsBased on the challenges and issues highlighted via illustration through the three case studies, it is clear that whilst transparency of information is paramount for standard LCAs, the sensitivities, complexities, and uncertainties surrounding LCAs for early research are critical. Full reporting and understanding of these must be established prior to utilising such data as part of the development cycle.

The frequent reader of this column might notice that from time to time I am using the Personality Profile to introduce young EMC engineers in an early-stage of their professional career to you. With this column, I would like to make you aware of the Pan-European Training, research and education network on Electromagnetic Risk management (PETER). PETER's main goal is to train 15 early-stage researchers (ESRs) in topics related to the development of high technology systems that maintain reliability and safety over their full life-cycle, despite these systems being subjected to severe and complex EMI threats. The project combines intensive training and doctoral research. Each of the 15 ESRs are working towards a Ph.D. degree, supported by an intersectoral and international supervisory board comprised of at least one academic and one non-academic supervisor, as well as one supervisor from a country different than that of the main host. This triple supervisor approach, from which all 15 ESRs will benefit, provides the perfect support to the ESRs, giving them the opportunity to gain experience and view their research from both industrial and academic perspectives. In addition, we believe that PETER's ambitious scientific and technical objectives will be met through our strategy of using four industry-driven application case studies central to the training and research programme. I am sure that you are interested to learn more about the personalities of those 15 ESRs. As every ESR has an outstanding personality, it was quite a challenging task for me to select two of them for this column. After consultations with the program leader and some supervisiors, I decided to introduce Mumpy Das and Oskari Leppaaho to you. Based on your feedback, I might introduce other ESRs in future columns of the EMC Magazine.

Spatial analysis of yield monitor data: case studies of on-farm trials and farm management decision making

A 3-year case study was undertaken of how North American farmers use yield monitors for on-farm trials in farm management decision making. Case study methods were used because relatively few farmers quantitatively analyze yield monitor data. At this early research stage, insufficient farm management information about the data was available to ask the right questions in a large-scale survey. In addition to the formal case study of farmers experienced at using yield monitors to collect on-farm trial data, the study evaluated the effect of yield monitor data quality on farm decisions. Two levels of yield data quality included standard output where the default settings of farm-level mapping software were accepted and where filtering of the data was undertaken. Results indicated that yield data quality affects farm management decisions. In addition, farmers receiving a spatial analysis of their on-farm trial data tended to use split-field designs instead of replicated split-planter designs. They were also more confident in their decisions than before participation in the spatial analysis project, and made decisions more quickly.

Data Analysis in Content Marketing Strategies

Recently, the importance of data analysis for content marketing has become apparent. However, only a few companies use data as a source of knowledge to enrich their strategies. The application of data analysis in the development of content marketing strategies is still at an early stage of research and still little explored in the business context. However, given the research results analysed, it is a promising and differentiating area for the success of content marketing strategies. In this paper, the main existing approaches related to this theme were analysed and an empirical study was developed through a case study in a company, with the aim of optimising the content production for its blog, regarding digital marketing, using the data analysis provided by the company's software. The study was carried out following an exploratory and qualitative methodology, using content analysis as the main technique for data collection. The results obtained after this work have made it possible to verify and demonstrate the positive contribution of data analysis to the development of content marketing strategies.

 This research is motivated by the community's view of the school which was initially famous for naughty children, then over time, this school has increasingly experienced an increase in a better direction. This study aims to determine the causes of student delinquency and the role of Islamic Religious Education teachers in tackling student delinquency. This type of research is qualitative with the case study method. (Nazir, 2003) said this case study research aims to study and understand a specific case, wherein the early stages of research it is equipped with a theoretical framework with the analysis in the form of one person, one organization, or a case and the researcher acts as an observer who analyzes why and how. of a case. Data collection techniques using interviews, observation, and documentation. The data that has been collected is then analyzed by data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validation of the data in this study used source triangulation, in which the researcher compared several informants in order to obtain valid data. The results showed that student delinquency that occurred at SMPN 9 Payakumbuh City was still classified as moderate delinquency, such as smoking, skipping school without explanation, fighting, saying rude and being disrespectful to the teacher.

American Women in Mission: A Social History of Their Thought and Practice.

The stereotype of the woman missionary has ranged from that of the longsuffering wife, characterized by the epitaph Died, given over to hospitality, to that of the spinster in her unstylish dress and wire-rimmed glasses, alone somewhere for thirty years teaching heathen children. Like all caricatures, those of the exhausted wife and frustrated old maid carry some truth: the underlying message of the sterotypes is that missionary women were perceived as marginal to the central tasks of mission. Rather than being remembered for preaching the gospel, the quintessential male task, missionary women were noted for meeting human needs and helping others, sacrificing themselves without plan or reason, all for the sake of bringing the world to Jesus Christ.Historical evidence, however, gives lie to the truism that women missionaries were and are doers but not thinkers, reactive secondary figures rather than proactive primary ones. The first American women to serve as foreign missionaries in 1812 were among the best-educated women of their time. Although barred from obtaining the college education or ministerial credentials of their husbands, the early missionary wives had read their Jonathan Edwards and Samuel Hopkins. Not only did they go abroad with particular theologies to share, but their identities as women caused them to develop gender-based mission theories. Early nineteenth-century women seldom wrote theologies of mission, but they wrote letters and kept journals that reveal a thought world and set of assumptions about women's roles in the missionary task. The activities of missionary wives were not random: they were part of a mission strategy that gave women a particular role inthe advancement of the reign of God.By moving from mission field to mission field in chronological order of missionary presence, Robert charts missiological developments as they took place in dialogue with the urgent context of the day. Each case study marks the beginning of the mission theory. Baptist women in Burma, for example, are only considered in their first decades there and are not traced into the present. Robert believes that at this early stage of research into women's mission theory, integrity and analysis lies more in a succession of contextualized case studies than in gross generalizations.

Popular reporting in the public sector: a systematic literature review and reflections for future research

Purpose This study aims to characterize, quantitatively and qualitatively, the existing research on popular reporting (PR) in the public sector, to synthesize and evaluate its current state. An overview of published research in this field will ultimately allow us to identify trends and opportunities for future research. Design/methodology/approach The paper combines both quantitative and qualitative analyses of scientific papers selected from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. It analyzes mainly the evolution of production over the years, areas of knowledge, authors and their affiliations, methodological approaches, countries and jurisdictions and research topics explored. Findings PR in the public sector is a topic still in an early stage of research (only 19 papers in the last eighteen years), by a very limited number of authors. Studies have mainly focused the USA and the local governments. Qualitative methods, namely case studies, have prevailed. Most of the empirical approaches have addressed possible characteristics and content of the PR. Non-empirical papers broadly have suggested PR as a tool to increase accountability. Research limitations/implications Given its potential contribution to accountability in the public sector, it seems important that PR becomes an institutionalized practice. For this, it is necessary to deeper understand and study this matter. The development of effective practice guidance and standards by regulators and the like, would be leveraged by the contribution of academics by increasing research on this topic. The research would benefit from more authors interested in the topic and an extension to countries other than the USA and Italy, and jurisdictions other than the local governments. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study so far has sought to characterizing the existing research on PR in the public sector. This study contributes by identifying trends and gaps in this research field, proposing topics for future development, which can help academics to develop research that adds to the advancement of this field. Research gaps identified point to a need to empirically confirm the impact of PR on accountability. Also, exploring about the content of PR may in the future include, among other topics, the perspective of the politicians and public managers. In addition, studying the reasons why preparers do not adhere to PR and whether jurisdictions’ institutional factors influence this decision, can advance in understanding the issues of implementing PR in the context of public sector overall.

The Use of Maps in Social Research: A Case Study in South China

M iAPS are the most effective means of portraying spatial relationships, but they have been used mainly to present conclusions drawn from the findings of completed research. If maps are used in this way only, much of their value is lost; they can be equally satisfactory as a means of raising questions and giving direction in the early stages of research. Maps have been used in both these ways within individual disciplines, but a greater potential of maps can be realized by utilizing them within an interdisciplinary framework. They can then be applied to a wider variety of problems and can be analyzed in terms of the theories and practices of all the disciplines concerned. An opportunity for such interdisciplinary cooperation is afforded by the Modern Chinese History Project at the University of Washington, where a group of research workers is studying Chinese society and its transformation during the last hundred years. Geography is one of the disciplines represented. The project has opened up a number of possibilities for the application of cartographic techniques to the grouping of data in order to reveal significant relationships among various geographic, economic, social, and political factors.

Qualification and Application of a Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometric Method for the Determination of Adalimumab in Rat Plasma

A liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) mass spectrometric method was developed for early-stage research on adalimumab in rats. The method consisted of immunoprecipitation followed by tryptic digestion for sample preparation and LC-QTOF-MS/MS analysis of specific signature peptides of adalimumab in the positive ion mode using electrospray ionization. This specific signature peptide is derived from the complementarity-determining region (CDR) of adalimumab. A quadratic regression (weighted 1/concentration), with an equation y = ax2 + bx + c, was used to fit calibration curves over the concentration range of 1–100 μg/mL for adalimumab. The qualification run met the acceptance criteria of ±25% accuracy and precision values for quality control (QC) samples. This qualified LC-QTOF-MS/MS method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of adalimumab in rats as a case study. This LC-QTOF-MS/MS approach would be useful as a complementary method for adalimumab or its biosimilars at an early stage of research.
