Abstract

1. The antifriction properties of AL25 and D16 aluminum alloys can be improved by surface laser alloying to create a heterogeneous structure in the surface layer. This structure consists of hard inclusions in a soft matrix. 2. The required surface structure is obtained by varying the number of laser tracks and also by altering the level of heterogeneity within the hardened zones. 3. The excellent antifriction properties exhibited by the AL25 aluminum alloy (or D16) —45 steel grade bearing couple are obtained by laser alloying the aluminum alloy with metal disilicides, to form a heterogenous structure within the limits of each alloying zone.
