Abstract

This paper discusses the work undertaken with children who have a significant person in their family in the final stages of a life threatening illness. The paediatric nurse works alongside members of both the primary health care team and the educational team in helping the family to prepare the child through the various stages of illness and, ultimately, for the expected death of that person. The aims are to form a relationship of trust with the child in order that he/she feels that there is someone available to talk to and discuss fears and anxieties that they may not be able to share with their parents. It is hoped that the child will then be able to make choices about his/her involvement in the actual care of the parent, with the support of those around them.
