Abstract

Antibiotic resistance genes can be reversibly silenced without disrupting the genes themselves or their promoters, according to Virve I. Enne and Peter M. Bennett of the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, and their collaborators. The research, published in the September Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (50:3003–3010), has profound implications. “Once the mechanism is revealed, it might be possible to apply this phenomenon for therapeutic purposes in order to extend the usefulness of antibiotics,” says Philip M. Tierno, Jr. of New York University Medical Center in New York, N.Y.
