Abstract
Morphological age estimation is the process by which a skeletal biologist or forensic anthropologist examines skeletal characteristics to obtain an estimate of biological age. Age estimation of juveniles and subadults is based on assessment of developmental maturity of the individual using dental development, ossification center fusion, and epiphyseal union, and comparing results to general growth trends. Adult age estimation includes assessment of the pelvis (pubic symphysis and auricular surface of the ilium), sternal rib ends, cranial sutures, and other degenerative changes. New methods such as Transition Analysis have stimulated a shift from traditional stage-based age assessment to a component-based approach.
