Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to examine the variables which are related to union organizing among hospitality workers in the United States. Predictors of union support were investigated in order to determine which factors would affect union success in National Labor Relations Board elections. The results of hierarchical regression analyses indicated that union organizing success was influenced by environmental characteristics, by attributes of the employees involved in the election, by the union involved, and by characteristics of the election process. Election process characteristics had the greatest influence, as measured by the explained variation. Specific actions that can be taken by hospitality managers before, during, and after elections are suggested.
