Abstract

Analysis of Antarctic marine ice(1) showed a decrease of 2.5 million km2 in the total sea ice area between 1973 and 1980. While a decrease of 1.5 and 1.0 million km3 is found in the Pacific and Indian Ocean sectors, respectively, over this period, the sea ice area in the Atlantic sector hardly showed any trend at all. Non-seasonal variations of sea ice area in the ocean sectors, with trends removed, showed no significant correlations. Significant correlations exist between monthly total ice area and an index of the Southern Oscillation.
