Abstract

Rectal prolapse is rare in children but usually occurs before four years of age. There are a few conditions that predispose to rectal prolapse as well as numerous conditions that mimic the condition. We present a case of rectal prolapse that presented as a gluteal mass and diagnosis was confirmed by radiology imaging and was successfully managed surgically. • Rectal prolapse in children is uncommon but usually presents before four years of age. • The cause is idiopathic in most cases and resolves spontaneously but sometimes surgery correction is needed. • Common causes are chronic constipation and cystic fibrosis. • There are various conditions that mimic anorectal prolapse hence easily misdiagnosed.
