Abstract

Variations of musculature of the splenius, semispinalis, and suboccipital muscles have been reported through the years. Recent publications have also identified a connective tissue bridge between the suboccipital fascia and the dura mater. In the present case study, the unilateral presence of a muscle in a layer between the semispinalis capitis and the suboccipital muscles was investigated. It has been shown that this muscle has special attachment to the rectus capitis posterior minor and was enveloped in fascia that attached to all muscles of the region as well as into the ligamentum nuchae levels C5–7 and the inferior nuchal line of the occiput. This variation may provide clinical significance for manifestations of headache and neck pain, as well as for surgical procedures.
