Abstract

A three step model is proposed to describe the annealing of fission fragment tracks in inorganic solids. An empirical formula relating the annealing rate, V a, and the activation energy of annealing, E a is proposed. Activation energies for annealing are found to vary from 0.16 to 1.0 eV for the detectors studied. The observed activation energies are independent of the annealing temperature. They are assumed to be a property of the bulk material and hence must be constant. The concept that tracks may anneal as a whole is ruled out.
