Abstract
Realistic inter-molecular potentials are non-separable, they depend not only on the relative orientation of the molecules but also on the orientation of the radius vector connecting molecular centers. We address the question, whether it is possible to have nematic ordering for some systems with nonseparable anisotropic interactions where mean field theory predicts ordering. We study the case of the anisotropic van der Waals interaction, and find no ordering for most crystal structures in two and three dimensions. Indeed, for closed-packed configurations in two and three dimensions the low temperature structure is quite complicated. Disordered structures are simulated by a random parking model. Glassy rather than nematic ordering is found for random parking configurations in two and three dimensions. If translational motion is allowed there are strong correlations between the translational and orientational motion leading to orientational order in a rectangular phase at low temperatures.
